Trust your Maternal Instinct - Don't Let Others Make you Feel Guilty
Every one is ready to say 'you must do this - you must do that'!
"Oh! You do not breast-feed your baby!" is one example. Young mothers can be under dreadful pressure; they are not allowed to make mistakes and are bombarded by a multitude of advice from the media and from society - suppressing their maternal instinct.
Nowadays passing on of information from mother to daughter is no longer guaranteed.
Previous generations of young mothers may have felt it easier to ask their mothers for advice regarding breast-feeding or crying.
Today we live further away from each other and it can become difficult to communicate.
New parents can feel lost - and not only very young ones.
Many mature, cultivated, brillant mothers find themselves totally disarmed by their new baby and isolated from support and advice. Baby cries without stop, you haven't slept for a week...
It is normal for new parents to feel lost at the beginning, but to each problem there is a solution.
Common problems are:
- Baby does not know how to suck
Take baby against you. Your stomachs must be at the same level. Put your nipple in his mouth. - Baby cries all the time
Check his nappy. Also he may need winding after a feed - see our article on colic. - Baby wakes every hour
This could be due to the preceding problem - or he could be hungry. - You need support and comfort
Don't be afraid to ask your doctor, midwife or maternity nurse as well as friends or family
Most importantly - Do Not Feel Guilty and Do Not Panic. Relax and let your maternal instinct guide you - do not stay isolated.
Three months on, this tricky time will be forgotten.
