Layette - What is it and What is Required?

'Layette' is the name given to the assortment of baby clothes and bedding. Traditionally these would be hand-made by the mother-to-be, family and friends before the baby was born.

Clothes

For the first three months it is not recommended to use clothes that have to be pulled over baby's head - many babies don't like this. Nappies will need to be changed frequently at all times of the day and night, so quick and easy fastenings are a must.

  • cotton body/sleep suits with cross over front fastening and poppers underneath (if you prefer to use nighties at bedtime, remember they should have drawstrings at the bottom)
  • a soft hat / bonnet to wear outside, depending on the season - remember all humans lose most body heat through their heads, and baby's skin is very sensitive to too much sun
  • soft blankets for extra warmth and comfort
  • cardigans are useful at any time of year just in case an extra layer is needed if the day is cool or night is approaching
  • a padded 'all in one' suit is very handy for Winter trips outside - poppers between the legs and a hood are recommended

Bedding

Although baby sleeping bags are now available for new born babies, most parents find cotton sheets and blankets far more versatile for the first few months of baby's life.  New Baby's temperature should be just right - not too hot or cold - and this is far easier to regulate by adding or taking away bedding layers. Although you can buy pram-sized bedding, many parents prefer to cut down bigger sheets - or fold them up - so that they can be re-used after the child is grown.

Other Hints & Tips

  • Baby towels with hoods are now available for bath time.
  • Make sure everything is (machine) washable at high temperatures,
  • Baby's skin is very soft and sensitive:
    - 100% cotton and other completely natural fibres is the best option to avoid eczema and rashes
    - Avoid biological washing powders and wash everything before you use it the first time
    - Fleecy clothes or bedding can irritate skin and make baby too hot
  • Buy a mixture of sizes
    - baby will grow far quicker than you think; don't waste money on clothes that will be worn once or twice, buy a few quality items
    - remember to match size with seasons when buying ahead of time
